When you’re meeting new people, you’re probably spending a lot of time focused on how you appear and what you sound like. If you want to build a genuine connection with someone, though, get your mind off yourself and start getting curious about them.

I can relate to this. You need to focus on the person you are talking to to have a connection with them, especially if you are talking via Skype. When I was taking Ukrainian classes from http://preply.com/en/ukrainian-by-skype before, it was awkward for me because i never had an experience quite like that, prior. I was worried that I looked too much like a child because of my appearance and the tutor might not take me seriously. Fortunately, however, my instructor was very nice and I learned to loosen up a little. Before we started classes, she talked to me about interests and hobbies so I could feel a little more comfortable. It was only when I asked her about herself that I felt really engaged in the conversation.
